The thyroid gland can become enlarged (goiter), or form nodules and tumors that appear as a visible swelling on a physical exam. Symptoms may include an abnormal sensation of pressure, trouble swallowing, hoarseness or pain.
Testing usually includes a blood test, a thyroid ultrasound and possibly a fine needle biopsy. Surgical removal or part (partial thyroidectomy) or the entire thyroid gland (total thyroidectomy) may be recommended. Dr. Shatul Parikh, one of Northwest ENT Surgery Center’s board certified surgeons, is a nationally recognized expert in minimally invasive thyroid surgery.
